About West Palm Beach
According to legend, over 300 years ago, several Spanish galleons were said to have sunk off the southeastern coast of Florida, dumping all of their treasures onto the ocean floor, never to be seen again. As a result, this coastal area, which includes West Palm Beach, Palm Beach and Jupiter Island, has earned itself the nickname the Gold Coast. The Gold Coast continues to live up to its nickname, but now as a playground for the rich and famous rather than the mythical stomping grounds of 18th century pirates.
Palm Beach is the most famous of these communities, with a name that has become synonymous with luxury and wealth. One of Florida’s most popular tourist destinations, Palm Beach and its relaxed, cultured atmosphere has much to offer visitors, whether it is a parade of opulent mansions, a polo match at the Palm Beach Polo & Country Club, or live music at the outdoor Coral Sky Amphitheater.
West Palm Beach initially formed as the residential community for the bigger, flashier Palm Beach. Over time, though, the city has evolved its own distinctive personality. Its waterfront location, warm tropical climate, sunny palm-lined streets, historic neighborhoods and shopping districts, and a vibrant arts community all combine to create an elegant, luxurious community. Its downtown Clematis Street District is packed with clubs and restaurants, and every Thursday night, the award-winning Clematis by Night free fountainside concerts series can be enjoyed while browsing through the wares of local artists. Movie theaters, pubs, dance clubs and concert halls round out the entertainment options for those who like their nightlife vibrant and lively.
The high brow culture of the Palm Beaches can be seen in any of the several museums in the area, such as the Norton Museum of Art, home to works of art by artists such as Paul Gauguin, Pablo Picasso, and Jackson Pollock. The Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens are dedicated to preserving the ancient and elegant arts of Japanese culture, including visual exhibits, demonstrations, and carefully tended Japanese gardens. For those who prefer telescopes to tea ceremonies, the South Florida Science Museum includes a planetarium with laser shows, several aquariums filled with exotic marine life, and interactive exhibits. The Palm Beach Zoo is another fun attraction for families. Home to several species of exotic, endangered animals, this zoo provides kids and adults alike with the opportunity to see Florida panthers, Komodo dragons and giant anteaters up close and personal!
